FIRST PERSON NARRATOR-(UMBRELLA MAN)
• narrator shows the reader only what he\she sees
• narrator doesn’t enter into minds of the characters
• narrator coincides with a characters in the story
• we look at everything through the eyes of one characters
• narrator interpretes events and characters’s behaviour for the reader
• the reader is freedom to imagine characters’s behaviour.
THIRD PERSON OMNISCENT NARRATOR:
• Tells the story from a wide point of view
• knows all the events of the story
• isn’t a characters in the story
• shift between the narrator as story-teller and narrator as commentator
OBTRUSIVE (VANITY FAIR)
• Narrator is a voice in the novel who openly address the reader
• narrator enters into the minds of the characters
• narrator is absent from the story but present in the text
• narrator steps into the novel (anticipate, summarise, make general comments, give moral generalization, speak to the reader)
NON OBTRUSIVE (EMMA e HARD TIMES)
• narrator doesn’t step into the novels
• narrator guides the reader’s interpretation
• narrator is invisible
• narrator is a story-teller, a commentator or a voice.
THIRD PERSON NON-OMNISCENT NARRATOR (SUN&MOON)
• looks at evens from a limited prospective
• allows the reader the greatest freedom to interact with the text
DIALOGUE-is the direct words of characters
NARRATION- show the chronological events
DESCRIPTION- description the place, character’s behaviour, action and situation
POINT OF VIEW is the point through the story is told, can be in the story, out of the story, a character or not a character in the story.
THE TWO TECNIQUES ARE USED TO SHOW CHARACTERS IN THE TEXT ARE:
SHOW-dialogue, monolauge, interior monolauge
TELL-narration and description
CHARACTERS ARE FLAT OF ROUND
FLAT is close, it never changes in the corse of the story like Mr Bounderby. He didn’t change he had jump from poor class to upper class.
ROUND is open, it changes in the corse of the story like Emma. She changes because she understood that she was a wretch.
